Dear friends,
I still remember back when I started interviewing amazing activist around the world. MujeresMundi grew up and become from a blog to a non-profit association bringing a message: without gender equality there is not community development.
I am not longer working alone but surrounded by five fantastic women from a diversity of origins and professional backgrounds. MujeresMundi is a dream becoming a reality. MujeresMundi, as an infoactivism project, has always looking to respond how women are important in the development of a society. Now, MujeresMundi, as a non-profit association, defend gender equality as an achievement where there is no discrimination on the basis of a person's sex. This does not imply that men and women are treated indifferently, rather that they are endowed with equal opportunities to contribute to and benefit from socio-economic and political processes, to access and control resources, and to fully realise their potentials.
It is not a secret, in many societies women have little access to their rights and few opportunities to improve their lives. They are restricted in terms of education, ownership of property, monetary return for their work, financial opportunities, and opportunities to influence decision-making at the level of the family and within their communities. There is a Gender hierarchy, manifested in family relationships, inheritance laws and customs; valuations of women’s work and its general invisibility; and the power to make decisions. Such hierarchy is generally accepted by both genders, and it is not normally questioned within its cultural context.
Gender equality, in contrast, is expressed in attitudes, beliefs, behaviors and policies that reflect an equal valuing and provision of opportunities for both genders. MujeresMundi path is Gender equality. In a situation where gender disparities remain pervasive in many dimensions of life. Today, a shift in development practice is occurring. The international community has recognised the importance of integrating concerns for women’s empowerment in the existing development objectives, and has asserted its commitment to gender equality in the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). MujeresMundi is a challenge, thank you for your support.
